The Backyard Test: Did You Actually Use It This Summer?

Summer has a funny way of revealing what works in a home.

You find the room everyone naturally gathers in. You discover where the afternoon sun lands. And if you have a backyard, you probably found out pretty quickly whether you actually enjoy spending time there.

Now that August is winding down, it's worth asking:

Did you actually use your backyard this summer?

Maybe the answer is yes.

Maybe the patio became your favorite place for dinner. Maybe the kids practically lived outside. Maybe you finally found the perfect spot for your morning coffee.

But if the answer is no, that's useful too.

Before spending money on a major landscaping project, a new deck, or expensive outdoor furniture, think about why you didn't use the space.

Was there too much sun?

No comfortable place to sit?

Not enough privacy?

Was it difficult to get outside from the house?

Sometimes the problem isn't the size of the backyard. It's that the space doesn't quite work for the way you live.

And that matters when you're thinking about making improvements—or even buying your next home.

A large yard sounds great on paper, but a smaller outdoor space that gets good shade and connects naturally to the kitchen may end up being much more useful.

As summer comes to an end, take a few minutes to look at your backyard differently.

Don't ask what it could look like on Pinterest.

Ask whether it worked for you.

Because the best outdoor space isn't necessarily the biggest or most impressive.

It's the one you actually want to use.
