What You Can Still Plant in Georgia This September

September always seems to fly by, but there’s still time to enjoy what the season has to offer. Even though summer gardens are winding down, there’s still plenty you can plant right now that will thrive in Georgia’s cooler fall weather. The best part? Many of these vegetables and flowers actually prefer the crisp nights and mild days ahead.

Here’s a quick guide to what grows well if you’re planting this week:

🥬 Cool-Season Veggies

  • Kale, Collards, Cabbage & Broccoli – These leafy greens and brassicas love cooler temps. Go ahead and start them from seed or grab starter plants if you want a faster harvest.

  • Onions – September is a good time to get onion sets or transplants in the ground so they can overwinter.

  • Lettuce, Mustard Greens & Spinach – Quick to grow and perfect for fall salads, these can be planted now and harvested before the first hard frost.

🌸 Flowers & Ornamental Plants

  • Pansies & Snapdragons – Both do great when planted in fall and can bring pops of color through late fall and sometimes even winter.

  • Ornamental Kale & Cabbage – These thrive when planted 6–8 weeks before your first frost, which makes late September an ideal time in most parts of Georgia.

📍 Georgia Timing Tips

  • First Frost Window – Depending on where you live, Georgia’s first frost usually arrives between late October and mid-November. Planting now gives your veggies and flowers plenty of time to establish.

  • Soil Prep – Work in compost and make sure the soil drains well. A little prep goes a long way in helping fall plants take off.

  • Mind the Heat – If daytime temps still spike, give seedlings some shade until they’re more established.

✨ Whether you’re sprucing up your porch with pansies or planting a few rows of leafy greens, September is a great time to refresh your garden. It’s not too late to enjoy homegrown veggies and fall color before winter rolls in.

What would you plant first—greens for the kitchen or flowers for the porch?
