How to Keep Pollen Out of Your Home This Season

Spring is beautiful—but if you're one of the many people who deal with seasonal allergies, it can be a bit of a struggle. Pollen has a sneaky way of finding its way indoors, settling on surfaces and in the air, and turning your cozy home into an allergy zone. The good news? You don’t need a total overhaul to keep the sniffles at bay. A few simple changes can make a big difference. Here’s how I like to keep my space fresh and as pollen-free as possible—hopefully, these tips help you too!

1. Keep Windows Closed (Even When It’s Nice Out!)

I get it—warm spring breezes are hard to resist. But open windows are like a welcome sign for pollen. Try using your AC or a fan instead to keep air flowing without letting the allergens in.

2. Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Your HVAC system is your secret weapon against pollen—but only if the filters are clean! I try to set a reminder to change mine every couple of months during allergy season. It’s a small habit that really helps.

3. Use a Doormat and Take Off Shoes

We track in a lot more than we realize. A good doormat and leaving shoes at the door can cut down on how much pollen (and dirt) makes its way into the house.

4. Wash Bedding and Curtains Often

It’s wild how quickly fabrics collect pollen. I like to wash my sheets and curtains every week or two with hot water during spring—it’s made a noticeable difference.

5. Shower and Change Clothes After Being Outside

After spending time outdoors—gardening, walking the dog, or just enjoying the sun—I do a quick change and rinse off. It helps keep pollen off the couch, bed, and everything else I touch.

6. Vacuum with a HEPA Filter

If you don’t have a vacuum with a HEPA filter, it might be worth the upgrade. It grabs all the tiny stuff that regular vacuums might miss, like pollen and dust.

7. Keep Pets Groomed and Clean

My dog loves to roll around in the yard—which means he brings a lot of the outdoors back in. Giving your pets a quick wipe down (or even brushing them outside) can help cut down on what they track inside.

8. Invest in an Air Purifier

This has been a game changer for me! Especially in the bedroom, a good HEPA air purifier keeps the air clear and helps me sleep better during allergy season.

None of these are huge changes, but together they’ve made a big impact in how I feel during the spring months. Hopefully, you find a tip or two here that helps you breathe a little easier too. Got any go-to allergy hacks of your own? I’d love to hear them!
